The HISTORY department of Paignton Community and Sports College presented an inter-generational street party to mark the successful completion of The Evacuees project.

This celebration brought together local artists, Second World War veterans and a range of students who collaborated to record, preserve and present personal experiences of life on the Home Front. The Evacuees project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to promote inter-generational learning.

Throughout the school year, college students worked closely with local artists, such as former BBC director John Fabian, to stage an original piece of multimedia theatre, The Evacuees.

This was very well received by community audiences last month.

Year Six students from Foxhole Junior School and Collaton St Mary Church of England Primary School also attended the performances in preparation for an innovative letter-exchange programme in which the primary school students adopted the role of evacuees, with Year Nine students responding in the role of their parents.

The Year Six "evacuees" were reunited with the Year Nine "parents" at a street party.

The street party hosted by Collaton St Mary C of E Primary School featured cast members of The Evacuees dressed in period costume (including Topsy the horse).

Wartime music was provided by Pennies from Devon and the refreshments were based on authentic rations.

The event was supported by colleagues from Brixham Battery Heritage Group and Brixham Operatic and Dramatic Society.
